SignPort is designed to make bookings easier for deaf BSL users and interpreters. Our app gives deaf people choice and control over their interpreter bookings, whilst giving interpreters the option to take bookings that fit with their lifestyle. Plus, SignPort is a social enterprise – any surplus revenue will be invested in attracting and nurturing new entrants to the interpreting profession, including deaf interpreters, and supporting existing interpreters to further develop.
You can access the app any time. Your booking will be at the time and date you have agreed.
The app is free to download and use. The interpreter fees will be paid by the person who makes the booking.
Whoever books the interpreter, pays for them as normal. You may be paying yourself, or the cost may be covered by disability benefits, such as Access To Work. It’s the bookers responsibility to make sure they can cover the cost for the interpreter’s time. SignPort does not cover the cost of interpreters.
The cost of the booking must be agreed between the deaf person and the interpreter before the booking is accepted. SignPort does not charge a fee for the booking.
As the app is only available in the UK, the app is intended for British Sign language (BSL) users. If interpreters join the app and have other language skills, for example IS or ASL, this will be listed in their profile.
SignPort is owned and operated by Deaf Action, developed in partnership with Burrotech. The app was developed with support from the Scottish Government, as part of their CivTech programme. You can find out more about why we developed SignPort here.
No, SignPort does not employ any interpreters. The interpreters on our app are either freelancers or from agencies. SignPort is a software product, not an agency.
Once you are registered with SignPort, you can book an interpreter in the app. Find out more in our video guide here.
You can book an interpreter through SignPort. Your organisation will need an account, please contact mail@signport.com and we can set that up for you.
